This is a spread from the children's picturebook I illustrated a couple of years ago, "Manny Makes a Rainbow". It was a collaboration with a very lovely author named Caroline England who was a pleasure to work with.
For this book I created every individual element as collage on paper first - the insect characters, leaves, flowers, pebbles, etc etc - then assembled the scenes for each spread in Photoshop. Every page had a zillion layers because of all the blades of grass and so on. The textures you can see on the bugs and some of the background elements are made by melting coloured wax onto special paper with an iron. I colour copied and enlarged each of these wax 'drawings' and then collaged with the copies.
I haven't posted any of my degree or other old work before now but someone wanted to see this. Plus I'm starting to get back into my old illustrative style again (all the marker stuff I've posted is mainly just fun for me, hehe). (:
(PS I wanted to post this in the 'Storybook' category within Drawing & Illustration, but the only options within that are 'Line work' and ' Painting & Airbrushing', WTF?! I hate dA's crappy categorisation system. Also it's not just 'traditional work'.)
